100% Secure Station awards for DLR
Serco Docklands, operator of the Docklands Light Railway, has this week achieved 'Secure Station' awards for West Silvertown, Pontoon Dock, London City Airport and King George V DLR stations. This means 100% of DLR stations have been put through the rigorous testing by the Department for Transport and British Transport Police and achieved the sought-after certification.
In 2005, before the London City Airport route was built, Serco Docklands was the first urban railway operator to achieve 100% secure station accreditations for its stations. After the required year in operation, the four new stations also gained the mark on 3 January 2007.
Tony Thomas, Managing Director of Serco Docklands, operator of the DLR, said, "We are very proud all our stations have been awarded the Secure Station mark as it shows we are doing everything in our power to keep the DLR safe."
The Secure Station awards reflect the high standards reached at DLR in station management, design, security and passenger safety. The scheme is managed by the Department for Transport (DfT) in partnership with the British Transport Police (BTP).
To win the awards, Serco Docklands worked with British Transport Police to meet high security standards. Security features and procedures that impressed the judges include: CCTV system covering every station; the provision of emergency alarms on all platforms; DLR Supervisor and Police patrols during off peak hours including late at night; the training of all DLR staff in Conflict Avoidance; and liaison with local boroughs on improvements to whole journeys.
A survey of DLR customers was part of the assessment process and revealed the crime rate ratio to be low and the management of the station excellent.
