The kits are issued by British Transport Police and contain sterile latex gloves, swabs and an evidence bag. Following a spitting incident, the DLR staff member will collect a sample of the spittle with a swab, seal it, and send the sample to British Transport Police along with an Incident Report.
On receipt of the sample, the DNA will be analysed against the National DNA Database and if a match is found, an arrest may be made. If there is no match the DNA profile will be stored, to be matched against future crime committed anywhere in the UK.
Last year there were 150 assaults on DLR staff, 30% of which included spitting offences. The introduction of these kits aims to reduce the number of these offences and increase the successful prosecution of offenders. Ultimately, the aim is to make DLR travel safer for both staff and passengers alike.
Neil McLean, Managing Director of Serco Docklands said "We will not tolerate abusive behaviour towards our staff. I hope this new initiative will help us prosecute criminals who behave in this unacceptable way."
